Employer advises Dumpster-diving for axed workers
Reuters News Service
NEW YORK - Bankrupt Northwest Airlines Corp. advised workers to fish in the trash for things they like or take their dates for a walk in the woods in a move to help workers facing the ax to save money.
The No. 5 U.S. carrier, which has slashed most employees' pay and is looking to cut jobs as it prepares to exit bankruptcy, put the tips in a booklet handed out to about 50 workers and posted for a time on its employee Web site.
The section, entitled "101 ways to save money," does not feature in new versions of the booklet or the Web site.
Northwest spokesman Roman Blahoski said some employees who received the handbook had taken issue with a couple of the items. "We agree that some of these suggestions and tips ... were a bit insensitive," Blahoski told Reuters.
The four-page booklet, "Preparing for a Financial Setback" contained suggestions such as shopping in thrift stores, taking "a date for a walk along the beach or in the woods" and not being "shy about pulling something you like out of the trash."
The booklet was part of a 150-page packet to ground workers, such as baggage handlers, whose jobs will likely be cut after their union agreed to allow the airline to outsource some of their work, Blahoski said.
Prepared with the help of an outside company, the booklet encourages employees to manage their money better and prepare for financial emergencies.
"If you have saved some money, pat yourself on the back -- you deserve it," the booklet reads. "Take out only what you need and spend prudently."

The Flight attendants website ( http://www.nwaafa.org/ ) has gotten a hold of this also. They have a link to the pamphlet. Check out their story at http://www.nwaafa.org/default.asp?id=330 and the pamphlet at http://www.nwaafa.org/aefiles/EAPPreparingFinancialSetbackBalance.pdf.

I just heard about this story myself. Talk about adding insult to injury!
Some of the actual suggestions that were made to save money:
#46 Don’t be shy about pulling something you like out of the trash;
#89 Shop at auctions or pawn shops for jewelry and antiques;
#79 Use old newspapers for cat litter;
#98 Cut the kids hair yourself;
#12 Buy spare parts for your car at the junkyard;
#95 Search the internet for freebies;
#18 Take a shorter shower;
#21 Make your own baby food;
#15 Get hand-me-down clothes and toys for your kids from family and friends.

Damn Andy, I didn't realize things were that bad. :frownsmil
I propose that we all start sending our trash to Andy. He can keep what he wants, and sell the rest to the Flight Attendants. We're here for ya Buddy!biggthump

I guess they were at least trying to help, no matter how stupid it came out. The rest of the airlines' management can't even muster up enough energy to offer a few suggestions. Let's see if we can come up with some for them:
1.) Get yourself a real job earning a higher paycheck with better benefits.
2.) Become a CEO or director. You can then take a 50% pay cut and STILL be a multi-millionaire.
3.) Stay with your airline but do the least amount of work possible so as to get your money back in productivity decreases.
4.) Especially for nightshifters, bring your job hunting materials with you to work. You can put the sim on motion and do the work in there.
5.) Take extra long preflights so you can catch up on sleep. This way you can interview for better jobs during the day.
6.) Search the trash cans around the CEO's and director's offices for goodies. You may find some errantly disposed items worth a fortune by extortion.
7.) Start yourself an eBay store to sell off everything of value you can smuggle home from work. Be sure and file off those pesky serial numbers as they can be used against you later in a court of law.
Wow, this is really easy! I just blurted these out in rapid-fire fashion! You guys give it a swing!

I prefer #56 on the list:
Borrow a dress for a big night out...
Something revealing but not too trampish. And no stripes... they make me look fat.

8.) Wipe with one sheet of toilet paper, or none at all. Water and a little soap are cheaper than replacing that roll of TP.
9.) Same with Kleenex. Blowing your nose in your hand and washing it is cheaper. (With #8 & #9, you could try to save both urges for work or when your out somewhere, thus using someone else's resources.)
screwy: blahblah:
By the way, for those who are critical of these suggestions, please don't attack the messenger! After all, we are ONLY trying to help here!

They should have added a 102nd tip: Instead of buying cosmetics, soft drinks, toiletries, etc., don't be afraid to dig through the impound bin at the airport security checkpoints for something you need.
