I posted my resume on the old board and within minutes I had emails for job offers. i don't know what company sponsors this site but I've been happy with the results. Especially since it's free.

Being Canadian That automatically eliminates me from all the USA military contracts as they require USA citizenship. They look like all the interesting positions. How about hearing from more people that posted their resume in the resume's section. I know the one person got job offers within minutes any one else? Are there any companies out there that would sponser a foreigner? I know it is an expensive process and used to take 5 years but now they have a new process called PERM starting April 1st that will only take 45 days. ( Still expensive ) The government only audits 20 percent of applications, but , that means if a company sponsors you you could change jobs on them in less then a year not be stuck with the same company for 5 years. Any comments? I think this will make it less likely of finding a sponsor.

I found my job at PanAm through this message board. They sponsered me back in 2000 and even helped with the cost of my green card process. I signed a agreeement that I would pay them back (pro-rated) if I left before the 5 years agreement. I have been working for them ever since and have been treated with the utmost professionalism.

Andy should never have to buy a beer again. I'd buy you one if the chance ever arose. How about an "Andy-Palooza"?

I got a job offer from a company posted on this site. A good job and a good salary!

Also..... Simulator Techs qualify for TN-1 (NAFTA!) visas so Canadian do not require a green card. When the job is offered to you, US immigration will grant the renewable (for as long as you keep the job) visa. After four years you can apply for the green card without sponsorship.

Is this 4 year rule written down anywhere? My immigration lawyer has never heard of this. Nafta is okay if you do not want your wife or teenage children to work. It is a pain to renew your TN visa every year and to be at the whim of the immigration officer you present your papers too. If you have an engineering degree it is usually no problem but simulator technician is not one of the approved free trade jobs. You either try to sneak in as a management consultant or as I did this year ( The nice immigration officer ,after they sent me back to Canada ,told me to apply for this ) scientific technician.

The TN1 visa is best if you do not intend to stay in the US for good. (A temporary position, a contract job or something to get experience and then move on.) The problem with using a TN1 visa for a permanent position is having to renew every year. After 3 years the INS will be very reluctant to renew as it is intended to be a temporary visa.
If you plan to stay in the US for the long term or emigrate then you should get the H1B visa. This is harder to obtain as it requires sponsorship papers to be filed by the employer. The employer is required to justify the visa by declaring certain things about the job and meeting some government specified criteria. Many companies don?t want to make this commitment or cannot because of the current employee base. (I believe there is also a cost to the employer to sponsor.)
The H1B is designed to last six years and intended to cover the applicant long enough to apply for a ?green card? (naturalization). You can apply for a green card after four years and it usually takes two years to receive it, hence the six year H1B visa. I don?t know if the four year rule is stated in any US immigration publications but there is a lot of info about the H1B visa on the internet. I got all my info from two different HR people from different airlines who had the same immigration offer for me. Their paperwork was essentially identical and discussed the H1B and green card time frames.

Not all what you say is true. The intial H1B visa is valid for 3 years and then can be renewed once for a total of 6 years. Yes it does cost the sponser some money and proof they cannot fill job with an American worker. You do not have to wait any time to apply for a green card. You can apply for it before you start work in the USA as long as you have a sponser. I think the USA companies that offered you the job were trying to get you to work for them longer. After you get a green card you need to stay with the same company for an additional 6 months. At one time it would take about 3 years to get a green card but with the new PERM rules in place a green card is yours within 45 days.( Actually about 6 months and 45 days as sponser company has to advertise job in newspaper) The new PERM rules makes the sponsoring company jump threw hoops to prove that they could not hire a qualified American worker. I think the new PERM rules will make it less likely a company would hire a foreigner as you could literally quit on them within a year. As for a TN1 visa you are at the mercy of the immigration officer you present your papers to. I have had 4 so far and been sent back to Canada 3 out of 4 times to get more paperwork. It is true that this TN visa is temporary and you are not supposed to apply for green card but!!!!!! you can. In the end forget all the old 3 or 6 year rules with PERM you can get a green card in 45 days! So if you get any job offers from American companies let them know the rules have changed.
