The first is in the cockpit of the B-52 mobile static flight sim at Carswell in 1973.
The second is a few years later in a B-52 H we got in at Carswell from Castle.. around 1975, I think.
Those servos on the doors are the old, old analog Curtus Wrong.
The first picture was in the base paper, Fem Lib comes to Carswell, when I was the first female stationed there that worked in "a mans job".
Went to Chanute for tech school in 1971, one of 4 females allowed as an experiment to see if we could handle the job.
I got a LOT of time on the mobile sims, first KC-135 and B-52 G.
Went on to the F-4E at Homestead.
Then on to civilian sims.

Ma'am, it is with great respect and admiration i say thank you, it isn't very often these days that i get to meet some one who is a "first" at anthing.
while at homestead, you worked with half of the team at Airbus training center, as we have several techs that are homestead vets frm the early 70's to the end of the program.
good to meet you.

During your time at Homestead, you wouldn't have worked for a gentleman by the name of Billy Bain, would you?

The picture in the cockpit was in the Carswell Base paper, probably in January 1973, the other was years later when I was a buck Sergent.
I remember the three women I went through Chanute with, two went to Castle and one to Wright Patterson.
To be that young again... My Daughters don't think any thing of the fact that females had to push for the right to do so many things back then. whyme:
Thanks I loved those years, gota lot of "war stories" from back then. laugh:
Billie Bains.. I've been trying to remember, it seems to sound familiar but not sure. What ever happened to Mc Swain?
I remember the powers that be had red-lined all females before me, had to take me due to joint-spouse regs.
I have to admit going from SAC to TAC was a letdown, I was told I was too Military for the NEW Airforce laugh:

Mulkum, Do you by chance remember the names of the females that went to Castle AFB? I was stationed there in 1977, working on B-52's/KC-135's aircraft, and later went onto the Defensive Sims. Even in 1976 it was not unusual to be disliked by others for being a female in a non pencil-pushing job in the military. I wouldn't trade my experience in the military for anything. My grown children still don't understand about their mother wearing combat boots. laugh:

your kids not understanding makes a pretty good statement that you did what you set out to do for future women, made it that much better. i still applaud you.faintt: bowdown:

One was Pam P. (She got married in tech school and I don't remember her married name.
The other Got married in tech school too, I hhave been trying to remember her name, I think it was the same as the other one who went to Wright Patterson, I think, or some base in the upper N.E.
Cathy Maybe?
A crew of us went t Castle in 1974 (I think.. it's hell getting old purplex: )
and took down a B-52 H to take back to Carswell, I spent the night drinking in the dorm of a few old classmates from Chanute and remember going in late feeling like %#&%, my crew giving me this look.... ROFL
The four of us only got into sims because we faught for it, in basic we were handed "dream sheets" with only womens jobs on it, I put all zero's for my choice and the guy asked if I didn't qualify for ANYTHING? I told him no, that I didn't choose any of them, he asked what I wanted, I said electronics, he asked my score, I told him and he gave me somewhere else to go the next day.
There was this huge book of jobs I didn't have a clue of what they were and only picked sims because I remembered the simulater for drivers training in high school.
The thing about all of us was that our fathers had taught us electronics growing up and we were already experienced.
I remember females coming in years after me who were given the choices.
Was Fergison still there when you were there?

AS you I vaguely remember some people from Castle, Sgt. Murhpy is in a photo I had from one of the cook outs along Thraikill?, Basset and many more that I don't remember names. Cheif Master Nancy T. and Bassett and I are still in contact. Wish I could find that photo to post. Bassett and I spent a day in ST. Pete, Fl. just a couple of months ago.
I was gone from mobile sims when the first women technicians were arriving although the 22nd BW was preparing for the first women technicians. There was quite a fuss about having women as escorts on the mobile simulators as wives of male technicians fretted about what their husbands might do if alone for two weeks with another woman. Eventually the branch chiefs decided there would be no female escorts.
First female actually assigned to a shop I was in occurred in 1976 or 1977 when Suzette Boucher got assigned to the E-3A AWACS sim at Tinker AFB. She seemed to get along well with the boys and held her own. She eventually married another technician named Rollins? who was studying to get his CPA. He wasn't much of a simulator technician. This couple left the Air Force and returned to civvy street. Don't know what happened to them afterwards.
Suzette was best described as a zoology hobbyist for she was one of those people who loved all sorts of beasts. She was one of the worst housekeepers I ever knew and kept parrots, mynahs, snakes and other reptiles in her house. I never knew how she could stand all that smell and birdseed. I'm sure she is not unique but I wouldn't be at all surprized to learn she now worked at a zoo.

I remember Sue, she was the day shift super when I got there in 1980. I never really got along with her that well. I remember she bought a nice Honda motorcycle and then ruined it by painting a rose on the tank. The last I heard she and her hubby were headed to Washington I believe to hunt for sapphires or something.
You're right, she wasn't much of a tech. But she sure took a shine to David Jarinko who was a pretty good tech. Although I'm sure Jeff doesn't have a lot good to say about him.

Howdy Mulkum,
My name is John Abbott and I was on the static and mobile B-52G simulators out of Barksdale AFB in 1973 and 1974.
I am building a web site of legacy simulators and trainers and I am looking for pictures to post. Can I add your pictures to my web site?
In exchange I will attach a picture of the B-52G mobile simulator that my crew mates gave me when I moved on to my next assignment which was to the A-7D digital simulator at England AFB.
Anyone who reads this post is also welcome to suggest pictures.
My site is www.aircrew-training-devices.com (http://www.aircrew-training-devices.com)
Thanks,
John
OOPS! My JPEG image that I tried to attach is too large (963K) for this forum. I will try to reduce it or post it on my web site for you to pick up.
